What does personal finance gospel dictate in the event you're invited to a dinner party (free food!) on very short notice given by people of whom you're not particularly fond (poor company) and to whom you may then have to extend a reciprocal invitation?

Personal finance gospel may be in favor of free food, but etiquette gospel would say that is trumped by your reluctance to reciprocate.
Fortunately, the "very short notice" gives you a no harm, no foul, out.
HC above has it right on the (pardon the pun) money.
Not having to waste one's precious and limited free time (twice!!)being pleasant to people who annoy you: Priceless.
