Subletting: Just a Thought

My parents will be away for the entire summer. A friend of mine is housesitting for them, and plans to sublet her room (okay, "space," since she doesn't really have walls yet) while she stays in my parents' apartment. I wonder just a teeny, tiny bit if K and I couldn't do similarly: pack up a bit, stay in my parents' apartment with the friend for a month (or two), and pocket the sublet money.

It seems a) troublesome, b) risky, in the stranger-in-my-house way, and c) like a boundary issue I may not want to deal with, but...on the other hand...a month or two of rent reimbursed. It's kind of tempting.

Generally speaking, sublet rents tend to be lower than market rents. I'd spend some time on Craigslist figuring out what you could get for your place, discounting for some wear and tear, and figuring out if it was still worth it to you (assuming all the emotional/psychological issues were in line).

I'm with HC, do your homework on Craigslist. OTOH, I have a friend that does this all the time - gets a housesitting gig, and sublets for the extra ducats. In primetime Boston, subletters pay *more* then they would if they were just renters so it works out.

That's not a bad idea ... I was thinking of doing something similar next year when I go overseas for a month or two ... but I'm also paranoid about people renting my space. There's just something uneasy about it.

hc and 3 things, I agree with the Craigslist recommendation. As in Boston, 3 things, New York summer sublets actually go for a higher price than market rent, so it would be a significant boost.

sf, I agree that there's some uneasiness with having people in my space, though.

I never thought about the subletting thing. It sounds like a good idea, plus you would make a little cash with it.
